Surgical excision: removing a tattoo or PMU in one session

Surgical excision removes a tattoo or PMU in one procedure but leaves a scar and does not suit every area. Why laser removal is usually the better option.

It turns out that all it takes to remove a tattoo or PMU is one procedure. All in order!

If you realise that you dislike the tattoo and need to get rid of it, look for a surgeon. Book a session. Come to the procedure. You say, “I need to remove the tattoo.” And practically the next day, you walk out with perfectly clear skin!

Well, almost…

I hear a note of sarcasm… What’s wrong with surgery?

After the procedure of surgical excision of tattoos and PMU you are promised fabulous results: the pigment will be gone in one session, leaving only an inconspicuous cosmetic suture.

A tiny price to pay for getting rid of an annoying tattoo, isn’t it?

And now look at the photo in the carousel. It’s the aftermath of the same procedure, only unadorned. Unaesthetic stitches, hypertrophic scars…

It’s amazing how differently the same procedure can be presented!

Let me say right away: I’m not going to throw accusations around or poke fun at the professionalism of surgeons. It’s just that this service has more cons than pros by default.

Why is surgical excision not the solution in most cases?

Let’s go in order:

  1. Not all tattoos can be excised successfully. Not all areas of the body allow high-quality excision and suturing of tissues. Sometimes after surgical intervention the skin, roughly speaking, cannot be sutured (due to the large area of the tattoo, immobility of tissues, etc.).
  2. You’ve already seen in the photo that it’s impossible to avoid scarring. Instead of a “cosmetic suture” it is quite realistic to get a noticeable hypertrophic scar (depending on the situation). And with tissue grafting, skin scarring is even worse.

Is laser removal an alternative to surgery?

Yes! In most of the cases where people have resorted to surgery, the laser would have dealt with the problem easily!

But I have noticed that artists who support the surgical method present laser removal in a negative light. They say it is expensive, time-consuming and dangerous. At the same time, they show the work of would-be artists who spoil the reputation of the procedure.

The client has two options: either lie on the operating table or “definitely” get complications from the laser. In the first case, at least there is a guarantee that the tattoo or PMU will be removed, quickly and without fuss.

Speed is, of course, good. But is it worth paying for quick tattoo removal with scars on the body?

Even if the suture can be camouflaged, the person will be left with a scar on the skin for life.

There are situations when surgical excision is combined with plastic surgery. This option is acceptable if you are confident in the competence of the specialist. After all, everything must be perfect!

Remember: the problem is almost always solved by laser. You may spend more time and money on visits to a specialist, but your skin will be healthier!

How many sessions will it take?

A quick estimate on the Kirby-Desai scale — for tattoos.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tattoo or PMU be removed in one session?

Surgical excision removes the pigment in one procedure, but scarring cannot be avoided: instead of a “cosmetic suture” a noticeable hypertrophic scar is quite realistic, and with tissue grafting scarring is even worse.

Is surgical excision better than laser tattoo removal?

In most cases no. Not every tattoo or body area can be excised and sutured well, and the scar stays for life. In most cases where people resorted to surgery, the laser would have dealt with the problem; it may take more time and money, but the skin will be healthier.
